Overview of sample locations

1) at Princess Elisabeth Station:

Active sampling during austral summers (Nov-Feb) 2017/18  ;  2018/19  ;  2019/20.  High-Volume sampling on pre-baked quartz-fibre filters for the collection of particulate matter together with polyurethane foam filter cartridges to capture more volatile components. Another strong pump (nominal flow of 330 SL/min) sampled during 2017/18 on polycarbonate filters atmospheric particles for inorganic chemistry analysis. During 2018/19 and 2019/20, 0.2 µm Teflon filters were used.
An in-house developed (UGent) active sampler was installed in December 2019 on the roof of a scientific shelter close to the station. This instrument sequentially takes a new sample every 2 weeks for 1 year, so a time resolved series, covering also the Antarctic winter will be obtained. This will give insight how the organic load in the atmosphere changes over different seasons.

2) East of PE station:

Polyurethane foam disk passive samplers in order to be able to identify trace organic semi-volatile and non-volatile micro-pollutants. In addition, polymer sheet type passive samplers have been installed to sample organic micro-pollutants. In addition, Tenax axial passive samplers have been installed for semi-volatile organics. For inorganic chemistry analysis, one Sigma-2 passive sampler with a Teflon filter and a Savilex beakder were installed. Poles were installed in November 2017 and sample collection and filter exchange took place in November 2018 and November 2019. In addition, surface snow samples are taken yearly for chemical analysis of particles in the surface snow.

3) 'Plateau':

Same set up as at location 2). Poles were installed in December 2017 and sample collection and filter exchange took place in December 2018 and November 2019. Also, surface snow samples are taken.

4) 'Deep Plateau'

Same set up as at location 2). Poles were installed in December 2018 and sample collection and filter exchange took place in November 2019. Also, surface snow samples are taken.

5) 'Romnoes'

Same set up as at location 2). Poles were installed in December 2017 and sample collection and filter exchange took place in December 2018 and November 2019. Also, surface snow samples are taken.

6) 'Frank Kenny South'

Same set up as at location 2). Poles were installed in December 2017 and sample collection and filter exchange took place in December 2018 and December 2019. Also, surface snow samples are taken.

7) 'Frank Kenny North'

Same set up as at location 2). Poles were installed in December 2017 and sample collection and filter exchange took place in December 2018 and December 2019. Also, surface snow samples are taken.

8) 'Breid Bay'

Same set up as at location 2). Poles were installed in December 2018 and sample collection took place in December 2019. Due to snow accumulation, the poles were not sticking out high enough anymore out of the snow and the sampling was not continued. Also, surface snow samples were taken.
